Verse Mapping 101 – How to Verse Map

Before we get started, it’s important that you know that many people do verse mapping in different ways. There is no one right way and no wrong way. The goal of verse mapping is to dive deeper into the Word and build an intimate relationship with God.

How to Verse Map

Step 1: Pray

Always pray before you engage in the Word. Not only will it set your heart and mind right, but it will establish a focused and intentional connection to the Father. You can pray first and then come back after step 6 and write step 1 if you’d like to.

Step 2: Select the Verse to Map

Select the verse you want to map. There are many ways to choose a verse, so here are a few examples:

  • Verse from Sunday’s message
  • Verse that’s been on your mind lately or one God planted on your heart
  • Your favorite verse
  • Verse from a special event like graduation or wedding
  • Verse related to a topic that interest you (joy, hope, peace, etc)
  • Verse related to a hero in the Bible
  • Verse related to a character in the Bible that you’re curious about
  • Verse from your current Bible study
  • Verse that has you perplexed
  • Verse that you don’t like
  • Verse that you love
  • Verse you’d like to learn more about

Step 3: Compare/Other Verses (or Design in the Verse Mapping Bible)

Write your verse in 2-4 different Bible translations. Consider choosing 2 from formal equivalence (word for word) and 2 from dynamic equivalence (thought for thought) translations. You can learn more about Bible translations here:

Step 4: Keywords (or Develop in the Verse Mapping Bible)

As you review the translations, underline, circle, highlight, or write down keywords or phrases. Look up keywords or phrases in the Hebrew (if it’s an old testament verse) and Greek (if it’s a new testament verse). Write down the definitions, synonyms, and root words, and any meanings or discoveries you are made aware of.

To find the Greek or Hebrew definition, go to the Interlinear tab.

Note: An interlinear Bible is not a translation. It is a tool that helps identify Greek and Hebrew words with their English translation.

  1. Find the word that you want to look up and click the Strong’s number

Step 5: Connections and Concepts/Context (or Actions in the Verse Mapping Bible)

Research and document what tells the story in this verse(s) through the people, places, and context referenced. Draw connections to other concepts in Scripture. Ask yourself:

Who wrote it?

When did he write it?

Why did he write it?

What’s going on in the passage?

Who are the people?

Where does the story take place?

What other scriptures reference similar concepts?

Step 6: Application (or Outcomes in the Verse Mapping Bible)

Ask God to reveal anything you should be paying attention to or anything you can apply to your life. Create a summary of what you’ve learned as well as any application to your life.

Here are a few examples of Bible journaling this month!

2 Kings 4:4-6

And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

2 Kings 4:4-6

Acts 7:3

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

Acts 7:3

Acts 7:3

2 Kings 7:4-5

If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.

2 Kings 7:4-5

2 Kings 7:4-5

2 Kings 13:18-19

And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.

19 And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

2 Kings 13:18-19

2 Kings 13:18-19

1 Timothy 1:18

This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
