Scriptures on Hearing the Voice of God
God speaks to His children in many different instances in the Bible. I believe He still speaks to us today if we are willing to listen. Here are a few Scriptures on hearing the voice of God.
God speaks through his Word
By far, the best method to hear the voice of God is to read His Word. Once you understand the Word, it’s easier to recall stories and verses that you’ll need when faced with decisions. It’s also helpful in discerning truth from lies. If what you’re facing contradicts God’s Word, you can be certain it is not from God.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 King James Version (KJV)
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
God speaks through Jesus
Anytime Jesus has something to say, I listen. That’s why I love the red-letter Bibles because it’s easy to spot. I love reading His words and seeing where I can apply His teachings in my life. In fact, I have an entire journal dedicated to what Jesus has to say.
Hebrews 1:1-2 King James Version (KJV)
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world….
God speaks through the Holy Spirit
There are many instances in the Bible where the Holy Spirit speaks for God. You have the Holy Spirit living inside of you. Take the time to begin listening to what He has to say.
2 Samuel 23:2 King James Version (KJV)
2 The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
Matthew 10:20 King James Version (KJV)
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
1 John 3:24 King James Version (KJV)
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
God speaks through Prayer
Romans 8:26-27 King James Version (KJV)
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
God speaks through People and Prophets
God uses people and prophets to communicate. There are 17 books of the Bible specifically on the prophets. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, and Daniel are the major prophets. The 12 minor prophets are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi. By the way, major and minor prophets weren’t classified this way because of their importance, but rather the size of their scrolls/books.
2 Kings 21:10 King James Version (KJV)
10 And the Lord spake by his servants the prophets…
Ezekiel 1:3 King James Version (KJV)
3 The word of the Lord came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the Lord was there upon him.
God speaks through Circumstances
Sometimes doors open, and others close. Here are a few Scriptures on hearing the voice of God, where experiences or circumstances show God’s will.
Acts 16:6-7 King James Version (KJV)
6 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,7 After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.
Matthew 10:11-14 King James Version (KJV)
11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.12 And when ye come into an house, salute it.13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
God speaks Directly to Certain People
In some instances, God will verbally speak to people. He did this throughout the Old Testament. He spoke directly to Moses (Exodus 3 & 33) as well as Adam and Eve (Genesis 2-3). Here are a few other examples:
1 Kings 19:9 King James Version (KJV)
9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
Mark 1:11 King James Version (KJV)
11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
Scriptures on Hearing the Voice of God
I hope these Scriptures on hearing the voice of God help you see that God can speak to His children in any way He chooses to. Just because He speaks one way to your friend, doesn’t mean He’s going to speak to you in the same way. What I can tell you for sure is that understanding the Bible by reading it often will help you determine if God truly is speaking to you.
Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
1 Corinthians 2:13
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
2 Samuel 23:2
The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue.
Isaiah 6:9-10
And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.10 Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
James 1:25
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
John 6:63
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
